- Black Friday 2020 isn't going to save you 75% if you are stocking up on Christmas booze; the discounts are a bit lacklustre across the board.
- But there are a couple of places where you can find wine, whiskey, and beer at what counts as discount prices.
- These are our favourite current booze deals in South Africa.

Like much of Black Friday 2020, booze sales are a little dire. We found that the Cybercellar website was struggling, and mostly unusable as of early afternoon, Takealot "deals" weren't, really deep discounts were generally out of stock by mid morning, and the physical chains did not have a large selection as part of their on-day specials.
But there are a couple of low-ish prices worth a look, across spirits, wine, and beer.
Here are our favourite discount alcohol deals on Black Friday 2020 in South Africa.
R8 for a 340ml bottle of Castle Lite from Pick n Pay – if you buy 48 with the right card
At R219 for 24 bottles of 340ml, Pick n Pay's standard Black Friday discount on Castle Lite isn't much to write home about; you can find that kind of deal elsewhere.
But the "Smart Price" doubler on that, for its Smart Shopper card holders, is something else: R385 for a set of two. If you're willing to buy 48 bottles at a time, that comes in at under R50 for the six-pack, or some R8 per beer.
A bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label for under R300 from Checkers, with its card
Checkers also has deeper discounts on Black Friday deals for its Xtra Savings members, without the need to buy multiple units. Present that card, and it will sell you a 750ml bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label for R299, compared to the steady R360 it typically retails for.
A little over R60 per bottle for Diemersdal sauvignon blanc from Makro
You'll pay R70 if you buy it from the cellar, and you can pay closer to R90 in the usual retail channels. But Makro will sell you six bottles of Diemersdal sauvignon blanc for R370, for a per-bottle of around R62.
That comes with in-store collection, or via Makro's lockers system.
R160 for KWV 5-year-old brandy from Ultra Liquors
Ultra Liquors is selling the KWV 5YO brandy at just under R160 a bottle, and at pretty much the same price by the case. That compares to more than R200 you could easily pay, and an everyday low price of R180 to the bottle.
A bottle of Belvedere vodka for R300 from BottleStore
The claimed discount for the standard bottle of Belvedere vodka at BottleStore, now available at R300 a piece, is actually a little understated; you'll normally pay close to R420 for it. And you can get it with next-day dispatch.
2+1 bottles of Auchentoshan whiskey from BottleShop for R800
You need to like – or be willing to try – two different types of Auchentoshan, but if so the BottleShop deal of R800 for three bottles is worth it. You would normally pay R350 a piece for the two bottles of 12-year-old, and another R370 for the "American Oak" variant. You're not quite getting the latter for free, but it isn't far off either.
(If you just want the American Oak, check out the twin pack from Norman Goodfellas for R580.)
