Black Friday deals.

All the cellphone networks – and a lot of virtual network operators too – have Black Friday 2019 deals and special offers. But, as in other sectors, some of those discounts are frankly impressive, running to single-digit percentages in some case.

The one exception is long-term data contracts.

All four the big networks are offering data deals that can be quite cheap, depending on exactly what you need and where and when you use big chunks of mobile data.

[Follow our Black Friday live update for all the deals still on offer]

Here are our favourite data deals from South Africa's big cellphone networks on Black Friday 2019.

Cell C: R7.45 per gig

Cell C is selling a 24-month contract data package with 10GB a month for R149.

You can just ignore the once-off 20 gigs (valid for only 30 days) thrown in as a sweetener, and that is still under R15 per GB. But if you manage to use the 10GB of data restricted to night-time usage too, the effective rate drops to R7.45 per gig.

Cell C's "Nite Data" is valid between midnight and 6AM.

Vodacom: also R7.45 per gig – but an hour less to use it

Vodacom is running a "big data" promotion that is very nearly identical to Cell C's. The smallest package Vodacom is offering includes 10GB of data, with another 10GB restricted to use between midnight and 5AM, a window one hour shorter than Cell C's.

That will set you back R149 per month for 24 months, SIM only, exactly like Cell C.

Assuming you use 100% of that data despite the restrictions, you will be paying an effective R7.45 per gig there too.

If you consider that Cell C sweetener, its deal is better. But if you are worried about Cell C's future, which is very much in flux, Vodacom may not look too bad in comparison.

Telkom: R6.67 per gig (extra Ts and Cs apply, though)

If you need data both while mobile and at home, Telkom has a deal that bundles a mifi router with a fixed-wireless home router, on a 24 month contract for R400.

The structure of the data included in that is slightly complicated, but even if you like to sleep it is quite a lot – and if you are a night owl the price is fantastic. The mobile router comes with 10GB data, and another 10GB restricted to use between midnight and 7AM (the longest "night" period of the lot). The fixed router has double that: 20 gigs, and another 20 gigs you can only use at night.

If you somehow manage to use all of that data despite the restrictions, you’ll pay an effective R6.67 per gig – and the hardware is free.

MTN: R16.67 per gig – but with all-you-can-eat voice calls

If you make lots and lots of voice calls, MTN is selling 24-month Sky contracts for R500 per month, half the usual price.

If you consider that only for its data it isn't all that great; with 30GB of data per month included, you'll be paying R16.67 per gig.

However, Sky comes with unlimited calls and SMS, which could make it a great deal for the right kind of user.
