Humans will start to consume more insects, and products containing insects, as the global populations grow and arable land becomes limited, says Jean Louwrens, co-founder of Gourmet Grubb.
South African-based Gourmet Grubb believes it is the world’s first and only supplier of ice-cream made using insects.

“Two billion people already consume insects as a part of their diet, so why can't we all?” says Louwrens.
Gourmet Grubb’s ice cream is gelato-style ice cream made from EntoMilk as a dairy substitute, raw honey as a sweetener, and peanut butter or chai spices for flavouring.
“When it comes to desserts and sweet products, people are usually more open to trying something out of the ordinary in order to treat themselves,” Louwrens says.
Business Insider South Africa asked Food24 editor Tessa Purdon, News24 news-editor Mpho Raborife, and interns Jessica Fish and Douglas Krone, to blind-test Gourmets Gurbb’s ice-cream alongside the more usual sort.
This was the verdict.
Ice-cream 1: Entomilk Cocoa.
“Super, super rich like that dark chocolate that I don’t like, but the flavour is perfect because it matches the real thing.” - Mpho
“It tastes really good, so if this is bug ice-cream that’s great because it is yummy bug ice cream.” - Jessica
Verdict Douglas and Jessica believed it was EtnoMilk ice-cream. The ice cream received an average rating of 7/10 from the four tasters.
Ice-cream 2: Standard chocolate.
‘That’s definitely a commercial ice cream, very sweet, lots of preservatives… it’s not that nice.” - Tessa
Only Mpho believed it was EntoMilk ice-cream. The ice-cream got an average rating of 6/10.
Ice-cream 3: EntoMilk Banana Bread.
“Wow… this is good. It’s got cinnamon and ginger and I don’t know what else but’s like pooeefff in your mouth. I like it.” - Mpho
“It tastes like a green smoothie that’s been placed in the freezer for a bit” - Tessa
“Looks kind of like it has got bits in it, maybe this is the bug one; maybe there’s like bug legs hiding here or something.” - Jessica
Verdict: Douglas believed it was dairy ice-cream. The tasters gave the ice-cream an average rating of 6/10.
Ice cream 4: Standard Rum and Raisin.
“It is almost like cream-soda flavour, but in an ice-cream” - Douglas
Mpho believed it was typical dairy ice-cream. The ice cream received an average rating of 6/10 from the four tasters.
Ice cream 5: EntoMilk Chai.
“Kind of tastes a bit sandy, like you are eating sand. It’s got a texture to it.” - Jessica
Only Tessa believed it was typical dairy ice-cream. It got an average rating of 5.5/10.
The EntoMilk chocolate flavoured ice-cream won with an average rating of 7/10, edging out the competition by one point.
