Virgin Active, the country’s largest fitness chain, will allow consumers to freeze their accounts for 30 days free of charge in light of the coronavirus pandemic in South Africa. 

Virgin Active previously charged members 50% of their monthly membership fee to freeze an account for up to six months. 

The policy has, however, sparked widespread unhappiness on social media in light of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to avoid public spaces with high-level foot traffic. 

Virgin told Business Insider South Africa it understands that members may be reluctant to train in a gym given fears about coronavirus, and therefore waived its 50% freeze fee. 

The fee waiver will apply to Discovery Vitality Virgin Active members as well, and can be requested by phoning 0860 200 911.

Aside from additional increased cleaning measures, and the halving of group exercise classes, Virgin Active will also limit access to gyms to under 100 people at a time. 

Outdoor workouts in the form of a running club will also be introduced, and water fountains closed.  Where possible, Virgin Active will also be opening windows at its gyms to increase air circulation.
