An explosive attack on Thursday outside the airport in Kabul where evacuations are happening has killed multiple US service members, according to the Pentagon.

"We can confirm that a number of US service members were killed in today's complex attack at Kabul airport," Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a statement. "A number of others are being treated for wounds."

The US ambassador in Kabul told his staff on Thursday that four US Marines were among those killed in the attack, which is said to be a suicide bombing. Another three service members were wounded, The Wall Street Journal first reported, citing a US official with knowledge of the briefing.

The report that four Marines was killed was confirmed by other outlets, also citing US officials.

In his statement, Kirby said "a number of Afghans fell victim to this heinous attack."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones and teammates of all those killed and injured," Kirby said.
