A guide to great places to eat in Joburg

"Whenever I travel, food is the most important discovery for me. Be it Asian, Brazilian or French cuisine, I love trying new restaurants abroad, but I’m always reminded of how good we have it in Johannesburg. While in Hong Kong, for example, you’ll find amazing Pad Thai, when it comes to good Mexican food, you might struggle.

In Johannesburg, we have a little bit of everything- from sushi to pizza and steak to cake – if you look hard enough, you’ll be hard pressed to have a bad food experience. Here are my picks of the top foodie spots in Jozi:


Pasta (premium)

A hole in the wall in the true sense of the word, Café del Sol dishes up exquisite pasta dishes with an ambiance to match. Don’t even try showing up without a reservation.

Pasta (value)

At Franco’s, garlic is added to dishes in liberal quantities, cheese is gooey and the pasta is oh-so-good. Try the Conchilioni A Zucca, large shells of pasta filled with butternut and ricotta, then baked in the oven.

The head chef attributes Pronto’s amazing pizzas to the secret tomato sauce used on the base, which is an old family recipe that uses 12 ingredients, including whole Italian plum tomatoes, olive oil, fresh basil, oregano and black olives. This is then slow cooked for a few hours until it is reduced to half its size, resulting in a delicious smoky tomato sauce.

Some may be of the view that being far away from the ocean puts Jozi at a disadvantage when it comes to seafood, but Pigalle disproves that myth. The mouthwatering prawns come off the shell in an instant and drip with flavour.


Currylicious prides itself on its home-cooked Durban curries, but also offers a North Indian menu. According to the manager, the restaurant churns out a ton of lamb a month, and after tasting the lamb breyani, R54, and the lamb bunny chow, R46, it’s easy to see why. Curries are spiced to perfection and served with roti that is perfectly flaky.

If you’re a fan of peri peri chicken, look no further than old school joint, Parreirinha. The no fuss restaurant has been dishing up prawn and chicken platters for the last few decades, and continues to host Gautengers from as far as Pretoria.

Fine Dining:

Five Hundred is housed in Joburg’s most exclusive retreat: the Saxon Hotel. Enjoy a 4 or 6 course menu, with or without wine pairings, and feast on intricately plated dishes like West Coast crayfish with Hermanus seaweed and nasturtium mayonnaise or lamb shoulder braise with chillied lamb sausage, rosemary, crisp potato flower and carrots.

Coffee Shop:

Croft & Co has everything you’d want from a coffee shop: free wifi, Illy coffee and a cozy, communal atmosphere that makes you want to linger.

A good breakfast spot should serve an all-day breakfast, and Teta Mari does just that, and superbly so. If you’ve had a big night before, go for the sinful double hotdog, or try the “Land of Milk and Honey” – French toast with halva and crème fraiche.

With butter imported from France and only the finest ingredients used, Belle’s Patisserie launched the legendary red velvet cupcake in Jozi, as well as the city’s first cronut. This is one bakery you can count on to always provide fresh, melt in the mouth cake and pastries 7 days a week.

A great choice for a business dinner, The Grillhouse is a meat lovers mecca, with fantastic steak, ribs and burgers on the menu. All cuts are done in house to ensure the utmost quality.

At Greenside Café, dishes are as unique as they are tasty. Each menu item is balanced and healthy- like the Raw Wrap, R36, made of dehydrated apple and banana and filled with spiralised raw sweet potato drenched in a macadamia nut mayo and pesto and topped with cucumber, avo and tomato.

Budget meal:

Situated in the heart of Norwood, The Schwarma Co is a charming Mediterranean/Middle Eastern restaurant offering to die for beef and chicken schwarmas, to which you can add your choice of fillings, like jalepenos, salad or hummus.

Casual, inexpensive and unpretentious- Rocomama’s has all the right ingredients for the ideal burger spot. Its specialty: “smashburgers”, a smashed ball of ground beef which is then seared on a hot grill to lock in the juices- scrumptious.
