  • Some Johannesburg residents can now order selected food and household items from Woolworths stores and have it delivered by Uber Eats.
  • There's a catch though: all prices are adjusted by 7.5% to 'ensure quick and convenient delivery'.

Residents of the Sandton suburb of Edenburg as well as those in Bryanston and Parkhurst can now order groceries from Woolworths Food through the Uber Eats platform.

Uber Eats SA's general manager, Ailyssa Pretorius tells Business Insider SA that the company started to form partnerships with Woolworths stores towards the end of last year.

Apart from a wide selection of food, clients can also order household items like toilet paper, bin bags, flowers and braai briquettes.

However, the service comes with a catch.

"All items are adjusted by 7.5% to ensure quick and convenient delivery," reads the notice on the Woolworths products listed on Uber Eats.

White and brown bread that usually costs R14.99 and R13.99 respectively at a Woolworths store will set back users R16.20 each on Uber Eats, and that's excluding the fixed delivery fee of R10.

A Woolworths franchisee approached Uber Eats to start with the deliveries, says Pretorius. He owned a restaurant business and saw the difference the service made in that business.

Uber Eats hopes to extend the partnership to any interested franchisee across the country and "will continue to evolve to suit the needs of the eater and restaurants that use the app, to ensure that eaters can find the exact food they want as effortlessly as possible".
