• Eskom on Wednesday said there is a high risk of STAGE 2 loadshedding tonight between 17:00 and 21:00, peak usage time in South Africa.
  • Using the load shedding schedules of municipalities, we looked at some of the areas that may be hit.

UPDATE: Eskom said the high-risk period for loadshedding on 1 August has passed with a need for such blackouts. There is a risk of loadshedding starting at 5AM on 2 August, the company said, but "it will only be implemented if absolutely necessary."

Eskom said on Wednesday (August 1st) there is a "high risk" of Stage 2 loadshedding tonight between 17:00 and 21:00, peak usage time in South Africa.

This following two days of industrial action to impact operations at Eskom’s sites, the power utility said in a media statement.

Stage 2 calls for 2000MW to be rotationally load shed nationally at a given period.

Eskom has sought the services of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) to facilitate the engagement between the organisation and union leaders to resolve the impasse over wage demands. Meanwhile, the police is ensuring safe access to power stations.

Despite this some power stations were affected this morning.

Updates on possible outages can be found on the Eskom's load shedding website.

We looked at five major cities to figure out which suburbs will most likely be affected on Wednesday night, between 17:00 and 21:00:

1. Johannesburg (City Power Johannesburg)

You can search for your suburb load-shedding schedule on its website. Your group, or block number, is listed when you search for your suburb. Unlike other municipalities, where load shedding occurs in two-hour blocks, in Johannesburg, you can expect an outage of approximately 4.5 hours.

City Power will also alert you via its Twitter account, should there be unplanned outages. If you are out of power, and not on the list, you might be due for a scheduled outage.

2. Cape Town (City of Cape Town)

The City of Cape Town has published a map as well as a Stage table.

Should Stage 1 be in effect tonight Areas 9, 10 and 11 will be affected. This includes Langa, Pinelands, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Constantia, Hout Bay, and Plumstead areas.

Should Stage 2 be in effect tonight Areas 9, 10, 11 as well as 1,2,3 will be affected. This includes Langa, Pinelands, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Constantia, Hout Bay, as well as Plumstead, Bellville, Maitland, Somerset West and Strand areas.

NOTE: If you are living in areas 17-23 you can find your schedule at loadshedding.eskom.co.za

3. Durban (eThekwini)

Ethekwini also published load shedding maps, even including a schedule in isiZulu on their website.

On Wednesday's schedule there are three time slots that will be affected: 3,7 then 2,6 then 1,5

Wednesday 01 August

4. East Rand (Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality)

Ekuhuleni Metropolitan has divided its schedule into separate blocks, which you can find here, this is for Stage 1 only.
