• Eskom implemented Stage 2 load-shedding on Sunday, due to run until 10PM.
  • On Saturday evening the utility implemented also Stage 2 blackouts.
  • Using the load-shedding schedules of municipalities, we looked at some of the areas that may be hit.

Eskom - South Africa's struggling electricity utility - said it would implement Stage 2 load-shedding until 10PM on Sunday due to a shortage of capacity.

This after it  implemented load-shedding Stage 1 on Thursday, and Stage 2 on Friday morning, and Stage 2 on Saturday evening to "protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout."

Eskom earlier in November said due to "operational challenges" and deteriorating electricity generation, load-shedding cannot be ruled out for the rest of 2018 and into next year.

"Generation plant continues to be out on planned maintenance (approximately 5000 MW) and there is a higher than expected number of units (currently at approximately 10000 MW) on unplanned maintenance due to technical faults," the utility said in a statement.

"Cahora Bassa hydropower plant is still supplying 700 MW less to the grid as a result of a damaged transmission line, which occurred late on Wednesday. Over and above these challenges, we are experiencing low diesel reserves due to the continued pressure on the national grid resulting in excessive usage of open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs).  In addition, the need to build emergency water and diesel resources to limit the loadshedding possibility or magnitude thereof in the following week also remains."

We looked at five major cities to figure out which suburbs will most likely be affected on Sunday until 22:00:

1. Johannesburg (City Power Johannesburg)

You can search for your suburb load-shedding schedule on its website. Your group, or block number, is listed when you search for your suburb. Unlike other municipalities, where load shedding occurs in two-hour blocks, in Johannesburg, you can expect an outage of approximately 4.5 hours.

If you are out of power, and not on the list, you might be due for a scheduled outage.

2. Cape Town (City of Cape Town)

The City of Cape Town has published a map as well as a Stage table.

Stage 2

Group 1: 08:00 to 10:30; Group 2: 10:00 to 12:30; Group 3: 12:00 to 14:30; Group 4: 14:00 to 16:30; Group 5: 16:00 to 18:30; Group 6: 18:00 to 20:30; Group 7: 20:00 to 22:30; Group 8: 22:00 to 0:30; Group 9: 08:00 to 10:30; Group 10: 10:00 to 12:30; Group 11: 12:00 to 14:30; Group 12: 14:00 to 16:30; Group 13: 16:00 to 18:30; Group 14: 18:00 to 20:30; Group 15: 20:00 to 22:30; Group 16: 22:00 to 0:30.

4. East Rand (Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality)

Ekuhuleni Metropolitan has divided its schedule into separate blocks, which you can find here, but this is for Stage 1 only. Stage 2 is dependent on how much power Eskom needs the municipality to save, and does not have a schedule up. We have logged a query with the municipality for a Stage 2 schedule.

Tshwane has posted its online schedule here.
