South African brands grew by 8% to R426 billion from R395 billion the past year, says Jeremy Sampson, Executive Director of Brand Finance Africa.
“[This reflects an] economy showing signs of recovery from the Zuma years,” Sampson said at the release of Brand Finance’s South Africa top 50 Brands report.
“The potential for South Africa going forward is huge, especially as new brands such as Capitec emerge.”

The South African top 50 Brands report, released this week, uses a combination of marketing investment, loyalty towards the brand and business performance to calculate the value of a brand.
Here are the top 10 most valuable brands in South Africa, with their estimated brand value.
MTN - R44.2 billion
Vodacom - R27.5 billion
First National Bank - R19.4 billion
ABSA - R18.9 billion
Standard Bank - R18.5 billion
Woolworths SA - R18.1 billion
Sasol - R15.7 billion
Investec - R14.9 billion
Nedbank - R14.8 billion
