Fast fashion retailer Mr Price is now selling school uniforms as it becomes the latest to join other retailers offering generic school gear.
Its new schoolwear range includes white long and short-sleeved school shirts, grey trousers, skirts and shorts, black jersey pullovers and Toughees school shoes.
Mr Price is traditionally a fast fashion retailer famed for trendy and fashionable clothing serving the more price sensitive customer.
Retailers such as Pep, Ackermans, Edgars, Jet and Woolworths have dominated the schoolwear market for a longtime and have expanded their product range over the years.
Generic school uniforms have also been on the rise, pushed by the school uniform industry in South Africa being placed under sharp scrutiny by the country’s competition watchdog.
Some schools and parents have been lamenting the steep price of school uniforms resulting from exclusive supply deals between schools and stockists. It led to a probe by the Competition Commission which warned against the anti-competitive behaviour and said schools should ensure that their uniform is as generic as possible.
Enter Mr Price with their own school clothing offering, which comes in a standard or premium range. Uniforms in the premium range are made of eco-friendly stain-repellent fabric, making it hard wearing and longer lasting.
Here's what is on offer:
The retailer’s short sleeve shirts will cost parents R59.99 to R99.99 or R69.99 to R109.99 for long sleeve shirts.
Boys straight fit school pants cost R109.99 to R149.99 and shorts go for R69.99 to R109.99. Premium shorts cost R99.99 to R119.99.
