Statistics South Africa has ditched its drum and adopted the country’s coat of arms as its new logo.

The national statistics service says its fieldworkers experienced problems when trying to get information from South Africans across the country. “The drum logo had nothing that identified them as being part of government,” it said in a statement.

There are also legal concerns.

“[The logo change] was precipitated by a legal opinion from Stats SA’s Legal Services division that, by using a logo that did not include the Coat of Arms, the department was in contravention of government regulations,” the statistic said in a statement.

Despite adopting the coat of arms, Stats SA will retain its independence, the service says.

This is Statistics SA’s fourth logo since it was rebranded from the Central Statistical Service in 1998.

It started off with a logo featuring a graph and grid, and then incorporated the Coat of Arms when it was unveiled in 2000. Three years ago, when it moved to its new head office in Salvokop, Tshwane, it adopted the drum logo.

At the time, Stats SA said the drum symbolises the way it communicates in “our quest to build a statistically literate society by demystifying statistics in the way that we present our data”.

The entrance of its new building was designed to look like a drum to reflect the Stats SA logo. Some 500,000 stainless steel buttons and 41 metal mesh panels were used in its creation.
