Sit-down restaurants – like Starbucks – still remain closed under the national coronavirus lockdown, but a new range of its instant coffees under its name is now available in SA stores.

The range include medium and dark roast coffees, as well as a vanilla and café latte, cappuccino and café mocha - which only require hot water to prepare.

Nestlé is producing the range of coffees with Starbucks, and has launched it at major retailers such as Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar, Makro, and Takealot.

A pack of four Starbucks vanilla latte sachets costs R39.99 at Checkers, while a 90g tin of dark roast instant Starbucks coffee costs R79.99.

South Africans are major soluble instant coffee consumers, drinking 1.6 million cups of instant coffee every hour, according to Nestlé.

Nestlé launched Starbucks coffee pods in the local market last year.

Starbucks' own instant coffee brand was launched in it its shops two years ago.

The brand was launched in South Africa in 2016, and has 13 stores, mostly in Gauteng.

But the owner of the SA franchise, JSE-listed Taste Holdings, sold the business to one of its directors last year for R7 million - after it couldn’t secure enough capital to fund its expansion.

Update: This article originally referred to Pick n Pay listings and prices for the new Starbucks range. Those listings appear to contain errors, and have been replaced by references to Checkers instead.
