This year’s crop of funniest Super Bowl advertisements features a Pringles ad that was filmed in Cape Town.
The National Football League’s Super Bowl championship – held on the first Sunday in February - is a massive television event in the US, and a showcase for the best ads of the world’s biggest brands.
Super Bowl ads cost advertisers upwards of $5 million (more than R70 million) for 30 seconds – and that’s before the massive budgets for the ads themselves.
The Pringles ad features two astronauts, back from a space mission, stranded in the ocean on a lunar pod.
They repeatedly fail to draw the attention of both Mission Control – as well as a passing ship – because both crews are distracted by constructing stacks of different flavoured Pringles chips, trying to find the optimum combination.

The ad was produced by global advertising agency Grey Group and South African Cuanan Cronwright, who is a group creative director at Grey New York, was a creative lead on the project. Cronwright was creative group head at Ogilvy and Mather in Cape Town until 2014, when he moved to the US.
The ad was filmed in Cape Town harbour, as well as Granger Bay and Goodwood. One of the astronauts is played by South African actor Waldemar Schultz, who starred in the SABC soap 7de Laan as well as in other productions like The Kissing Booth and TV series Die Byl.
Schultz also featured in another South African production that was a hit ad at the Super Bowl – the 2016 Heinz ad that featured a stampede of Dachshund dogs dressed up as Heinz condiments.
In 2019, South African Melusi Mhlungu wrote a Kraft-Heinz's Super Bowl commercial for their Devour frozen food, which quickly went rival.
