On Wednesday, Pick n Pay surprised hundreds of ‘elderly hour’ shoppers with free bouquets of proteas, orchids and Chrysanthemums as they entered six Johannesburg stores.
Each pensioner got a free bouquet as part of the retailer’s latest effort to lift the spirits of South Africans as the country approaches lockdown on Friday.
The elderly hour was launched to help reduce exposure to coronavirus for shoppers older than 65. This age group are at a higher risk of morbidity and mortality associated with the novel coronavirus.
Elderly hour takes place in all supermarkets and hypermarkets every Wednesday between 07:00 and 08:00.
“Last week we hosted our first elderly hour and it exceeded what we originally anticipated for this initiative. The response has been overwhelmingly positive amongst our elderly customers, with more joining us this morning for their exclusive shopping slot. Customers told us how they really enjoyed having the store to themselves to do their shop as quickly as possible,” says John Bradshaw, retail executive: marketing at Pick n Pay.
The stores included Pick n Pay Hyper Northgate, Hyper Woodmead, Krugersdorp, Cradlestone, The Falls, and Hyper Montana.
