From today to Friday, Pick n Pay shoppers will get a free R20 voucher to spend this weekend to end the retailer’s somewhat fraught scratch-and-win card campaign.
To celebrate its 50th birthday, Pick n Pay gave shoppers a scratch card for every R200 spent at the store in August.
Prizes ranged from R5 in airtime to R10,000 in shopping vouchers, and there were reports of people winning a packet of jelly or two-minute noodles.
But most shoppers ended up with a “No prize” scratch card, and vented their frustration on social media.

@picknpay I love Pick n Pay. Been shopping at the Hyper for over 30 years. Your Scratch and Win Promo sucks - I spent over R4500, received about 22 S&W cards- not one prize... seriously? Are there actually any prizes in this promo? #disappointed

So far, 350,000 winning scratch cards have been claimed – but the store has some 12 million customers every week, said John Bradshaw, marketing director at Pick n Pay, in an interview with 702. “So that's still plenty of people that are getting scratch cards and are not winning.”
“The scratch cards are given free to customers, which is a bit of fun on top of the great value we already provide,” he told Business Insider SA. In all, almost 1 million prizes will be distributed through the cards.
Pick n Pay has now decided to also give every customer who spends more than R200 between Tuesday and Friday, a R20 voucher to spend on Saturday and Sunday.
Shoprite has launched its own scratch card campaign to celebrate its birthday. Shoppers get a scratch card for every R50 spent (maximum two cards per basket), and the chance to win prizes worth R15 million in airtime, Shoprite vouchers, cellphones and appliances. Its campaign ends September 9th.
Has anyone ever scratched those @PicknPay and @Shoprite_SA scratch cards and won? Dear South Africans we are being taken for fools here. What if there is only one card or nothing nationally? @CassperNyovest tell your bosses to stop lying to us. "scratch and win my foot" pic.twitter.com/JXMPy0ORbZ
