A “technical error” has wiped out the data, SMSes and airtime of some MTN clients on Friday morning, the cellular network  confirmed. 

This after angry users voiced their frustration over empty balances and disconnected services. 

In a statement, MTN said the fault may impact recharging, current balances and customer minutes currently being reflected. It has affected "a small percentage of customers". 

“The resolution of this problem is a priority and all balances and services will be restored in the course of today,” MTN said. 

“We apologise for any inconvenience and are working to resolve this as quickly as possible.”

On social media users said MTN, the country’s second largest cellular network, “stole their data.” 

“Rt if MTN stole your data and airtime at midnight,” @Diegochuene tweeted. Her tweet has been retweeted over 7,00 times.

@SiyoMbalentle said: “please bring back my airtime, data and SMS’es… and twitter is free so I don’t expect messages of you telling me I’m overusing it after being a loyal customer.” 

MTN has 31 million clients in South Africa and operates in over 20 African countries, including Nigeria, which delivers a third of its revenue.
