A recently completed home in Sandhurst, Johannesburg, is now on sale for R150 million, making it one of South Africa's most expensive homes currently on the market.

Johannesburg is the wealthiest city in Africa, with half of the South Africa's 36,000 millionaires and billionaires concentrated in the suburbs of Hyde Park, Houghton, Westcliff, and Sandhurst, according to New World Wealth.

With this concentration of wealth, it's unsurprising that property in Sandhurst is some of the most expensive in the country, with the average home in the suburb selling for more than R15 million.

Homes on Sandhurst's Oxford Avenue are particularly lavish and equally pricey. A seven-bedroom mansion at 42 Oxford Avenue, modelled on the Union Buildings, was recently on the market for R150 million and is currently up for rent at R800,000 a month.

Now there's another Sandhurst "super-home" on the market, also for R150 million.

Designed and created by Pellerade Design House, this six-bedroom, three-storey home on Oxford Avenue took six years to build. It came to the market, through Chas Everitt International Property Group, in early November.

"At this price, it is one of the most expensive properties ever to go on sale in Sandhurst, and one of the most expensive currently on offer anywhere in South Africa, but we are confident of its valuation as it more than matches up to the Bantry Bay home that was sold a few years ago for R290 million, which as far as we know, is the residential record for SA," said Rory O’Hagan, head of the luxury portfolio division at Chas Everitt.

Set in grounds of more than 7,000 sqm, the super-home was inspired by The Manor, the landmark chateau in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles that belonged to film and TV producer Aaron Spelling.

The 3,300 sqm Sandhurst home, boasts a double-volume entrance hall with a glass floor and a domed ceiling lined with gold-leaf. It also features four en suite bedrooms, five more bathrooms and a guest wing with two more en suite bedrooms as well as its own kitchen, dining area, and lounge.

An eight-seater breakfast room, 16-seater formal dining room, and formal lounge with double-sided fireplace are contained in the main house's living rooms.

The house also has a salon, gymnasium, massage, sauna, and steam rooms. A family room overlooks a double-volume indoor pool and hot tub.

And for entertainment, the super-home also has a 20-seater cinema with its own bar, a double-volume private library with a spiral staircase leading to the wine cellar, a cigar lounge, a billiards room, an outdoor pool, and an entertainment bar.

There's a garage with chandeliers and room for 10 cars and space for a private bowling alley.

"In fact, it is already attracting the attention of leading financiers and professionals who favour residence in Sandhurst in particular because of its high level of security and privacy, large properties, and proximity to the many blue-chip company and bank headquarters in Sandton Central," said O’Hagan.
