We tried a new FNB kiosk that uses fingerprint technology. Here's how it works

FNB has launched a new kiosk that allows you to open an account with only your thumbprints as verification.
The bank has formed a partnership with the department of home affairs, and uses government records to verify your identity.
"The machines are directly linked to Home Affairs and because they use fingerprint technology on their side, we are able to quickly verify who you are," says Lee-Anne van Zyl, CEO of FNB Points of Presence.
The TouchPoint kiosk allows people to open an eWallet Extra account with their thumbprints. Existing FNB customers can also do all their general banking, except withdraw money.
The first two kiosks are located in Diepsloot and Ga-Rankuwa. Some 36 machines will be in use countrywide by the end of November.
Machines will be placed in high volume areas, branches, mass markets as well as places with a high SASSA volume presence.
"We eventually want to have a 100 more, but this is a start," says Van Zyl.
Business Insider SA decided to give the machine a try, and attempted to open a banking account with only our fingerprints.
This is how the kiosk works:
It took less than three minutes to set up the account. If you are an existing FNB account holder, the verification is much faster as the bank has your details.
Also, it is important to note that you need an eWallet profile.
Once you have clicked on the "Open eWallet Extra Account", you will be redirected to the terms and conditions of opening the account. Once you accept, you will be prompted to enter your ID number, after which you will be redirected to the biometric terms and conditions.
After accepting, a Home Affairs tab will open. You then need to scan both thumbs to verify your identity with the government records.
As I am an existing FNB customer, my transaction was immediately verified after I scanned my thumbs.
Non-FNB customers will, after scanning their thumbs, receive a one-time pin (OTP) sent to their phones, which they would have to enter before their accounts can be approved, and you are on your way.
