The value of unredeemed Pick n Pay Smart Shopper points has climbed to R245 million, up 22.5% in the past six months.
Around nine million people are registered as Pick n Pay Smart Shoppers, South Africa's most used loyalty programme. Almost 80% of Pick n Pay sales are driven by the Smart Shopper programme, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2021.
In addition to discounts on items, customers with Smart Shopper cards earn cashback in points every time they swipe. These points can be spent on items in-store or online. They can also be used on partner programmes outside of Pick n Pay, like refuelling at BP, or watching a movie at Ster Kinekor.
The programme's popularity has amassed millions of unspent points, valued at R245 million at latest count according to the retailers. Unredeemed points are growing as Pick n Pay signs up more Smart Shoppers who are looking to capitalise on rewards following the pandemic-induced cash crunch.
"Increased popularity means we now have more Smart Shoppers than ever before," said Andrew Mills, Pick n Pay's group executive of marketing. The value of unredeemed points stood at R200 million in May.
"For 10 years, customers have enjoyed the benefits of our loyalty programme, but it is evident that customers are maximising their rewards more than ever as everyone feels the impact of the past year."
And unlike cash, these Smart Shopper points do expire, 12 months after being earned. Pick n Pay is encouraging customers to use their points before they expire.
"Many customers like to save their points for a big grocery shop, or to buy items of clothing," said Mills, adding that the loyalty programme delivered over R900 million in savings over the last six weeks.
