  • Airlines and travel agencies are slashing prices for Black Friday 2018, if you know where to look.
  • In one of the better deals we've seen, you can holiday for 7 days in Phuket for R8,890, including return flights.
  • Blogger Lauren Melnick recommends you look at the app SkyScanner to stay on top of airfare deals.

Cheap flights are hard thing to find these days, especially if you are shopping with a handful of weak rands. But for Black Friday 2018 airlines and travel agencies are slashing prices, if you know where to look.

Travelstart’s "Black Flyday" has R480 flights to Cape Town. There are also flights to Mauritius, Kigali, London, and many more destinations under R10,000.

Then they have these crazy holiday packages:

Flight Centre has various savings on flights, holidays, cruises, and tours. The deals come with limitations on the dates you can travel, so be sure to look out for those.

Up for grabs is 7 nights in Phuket for just R8,990, or Bali, Mauritius, and Zanzibar getaways for under R10,000 each.

Business Insider South Africa has confirmed that Kulula and Safair have discounted airfares on their websites.

Locally, SanParks is offering 40% discount on selected accommodation, camping, backpacking trails and wilderness trails. (These are valid only for online bookings made on 23 November 2018.)

We asked Wanderlust Movement blogger Lauren Melnick, who has been everywhere from the Galpagoes to Bhutan on a shoe-string budget, for advice on how to make the most of Black Friday travel specials.

“I highly recommend signing up for Ethiopia Airlines mail list if you’re looking for a good deal. The airline flies to a range of destinations in Africa and Europe and is starting routes to Indonesia next year,” said Melnick.

“They are also a much cheaper option for South Africans than Emirates and Etihad. Plus, your flight time is greatly reduced because you’re not flying all the way to the UAE.”

While one way of saving is to visit visa-free destinations, she recommends you look at the app SkyScanner to stay on top of airfare deals.

"[Using the app] I’ve found return flights to Kenya for R 3,000 and return flights to Thailand for R 4,000 and return flights to Istanbul for R 5,000."

She gave us these other helpful tips:

The best times to get Black Friday flight deals is 5AM South Africa time.

Based on Skyscanner’s data from 2017, flight prices fell to an all-time low around 7PM Pacific Standard Time on 23rd of November. It means South Africans need to wake up at around 5AM to get the best deals.

The second cheapest time to book flights is 1PM local.

Use the 'everywhere' button on SkyScanner

Type in your nearest airport and enter “everywhere” in the destination field. Skyscanner will show you a list the cheapest destinations departing from that airport.

If you’re flexible with your dates, you can also choose to search 'cheapest month'.

Skyscanner will then tell you which month is the most affordable time of year to travel to any destination.
