National retailer Game says that there was an immediate shift in sales to energy-related items once load shedding hit. Sales peaked when Eskom announced it was to go into Stage 6 load shedding.
Some of the top items bought included generators, LED lights, gas-powered stoves and, surprisingly, candles.
Here’s what was selling:
Generators
Generator sales have seen spectacular “surges”, with sales of a Ryobi 650W petrol generator showing a considerable increase from this same time last year. It's on special for R1,999 until 17 December.
Gas
The retailer saw surges in demand for gas products including: gas canisters, gas lamps, gas hoses and regulators and portable, gas-powered canister stoves.
Rechargeables
Also popular were rechargeable items. Big sellers are rechargeable LED floodlights, rechargeable LED lanterns and power banks.
Solar Power
Some of the top-selling lighting solutions during load shedding included rechargeable solar lights, solar gutter lights, garden spike lights and solar LED floodlights.
Candles and batteries
Despite the increasing availability of innovative power and lighting technology, traditional load shedding solutions remained popular. Game is selling batteries of all sizes, and candles of every description hand over fist.
