The fine-dining Fyn restaurant in Parliament Street, Cape Town, has been ranked the 37th best on the planet, in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list – which features two more Cape restaurants in the top 100.

The 50 Best list has been going since 2002, and is based on voting by an academy of just over 1,000 culinary experts. It is focussed on gastro-tourism, and seeks to highlight restaurants around the world.

The top three restaurants, in the top 50 list announced on Monday, are in Copenhagen, Lima, and Barcelona, but the list is heavily biased towards Europe. Fyn is the only African restaurant among the top 50.

Fyn was started by Peter Tempelhoff in 2018, after 11 years as executive chef at Cape Town’s Greenhouse restaurant. The Top 50 award describes its menu as "Japanese at its core, using fish, poultry and meat from the best Cape Town farms and fisheries", and highlights its sashimi and the "showstopper" Outeniqua springbok, kabocha squash, Hokkaido pumpkin, shiitake and caramelised onion jus.

Fyn was among the fine-dining restaurants that offered high-end takeaways while pandemic restrictions closed sit-down restaurants. It had charged more than R1,000 for a Japanese-inspired tasting menu, but made available a "Fyn Experience Menu" for about half that, delivered to your door by the restaurant's waiters.

The "Experience" dinner menu is currently going for R1,575, before a service charge, or you can pay R575 for a winter-special lunch of either Cape linefish or Iberico pork, with miso soup and sashimi starters, and finished off with pineapple and rice ice cream.

Two other restaurants in the Cape feature in the same awards, in the list of positions 50 to 100, released earlier this month.

The "French-meets-Asian" La Colombe in Constantia came in at 56, and Wolfgat – the Paternoster restaurant named as the best in the world in 2019's inaugural World Restaurant Awards – ranked at number 90.
