School uniforms Shoprite vs Pep
Shoprite (left) and Pep (right) back-to-school uniform specials.
  • A full school uniform offered by South Africa’s biggest retailers consists of a shirt, shorts or skirts, socks, and shoes.
  • Shoprite is selling a full uniform, fitting kids aged six to ten-years-old, for R100 as part of its back-to-school promotion.
  • PEP comes in better priced at R90, but sizes are exclusive to Grade 1pupils.
  • The battle for the middle market – traditionally between Ackermans and Jet – is being challenged by newcomer, Mr Price.

The school year is due to restart in two weeks and South Africa’s largest retailers are offering major discounts on uniforms. Both Shoprite and PEP have kicked 2021 off with jampacked clothing catalogues, slashing prices of individual items by up to 40%.

Shoprite and PEP, which dominate the school uniform market in South Africa, will both be running specials throughout January. Deals on full uniforms, which include shirts, pants or skirts, socks, and shoes, are popular with customers.

These recurring offers, which have, over the years, become a mainstay of Shoprite and PEP’s January promotions, are coupled with competitions.

This year, PEP has partnered with shoe polish brand, Kiwi. Shoppers can win their share of R35,000 by purchasing the Kiwi polish on promotion and following the WhatsApp prompts.

Shoprite has continued with its “Class Of” competition, which aims to pay R5,000 each towards school fees of more than 420 pupils. The competition is run in partnership with the department of basic education.

Shoprite – R100

Valid until 7 February, Shoprite’s back-to-school uniform promotion offers options for both boys and girls. Shoppers will need to swipe their Xtra Savings card to qualify for the discounted uniform, which includes:

  • Gladneck short sleeve school shirt (ages six to ten years)
  • Girls’ grey skirt or boys’ grey shorts (ages six to ten years)
  • Girls’ white socks or boys’ grey socks
  • Lace-up school shoes (kid sizes 9 to 1)

Shoprite offers a four-month guarantee on the school shoes included in the promotion which covers for wear on heels and soles. The offer is limited to selected Shoprite stores.

PEP – R90

While PEP’s “first school outfit” promotion beats Shoprite’s price, it is exclusively aimed at children entering their first year of school. The offer, which is available at selected PEP stores while stocks last, includes:

  • Gladneck short sleeve school shirt (ages five to six years)
  • Girls’ skirt or boys’ shorts (ages five to six years)
  • Girls’ or boys socks
  • Girls’ or boys’ school shoes (kid sizes 8 to 1)

Pep also offers a wider range of school clothing in various colour options compared to Shoprite.

Jet and Ackermans

Jet and Ackermans are also offering back-to-school promotions, with discounts on individual items of clothing. While no full uniform specials are on offer as a package deal, both retailers have an extensive selection of shirts, shorts, skirts, shoes, and socks.

A full school uniform at Ackermans, made up of items purchased individually, starts at around R295. Ackermans is also running a two-pack special, which includes socks, face masks and shirts at discounted prices when buying in pairs.

The price of a full school uniform at Jet starts at around R230.

Both offers are valid while stocks last or until 31 January.

Mr Price

New to the school uniform market, Mr Price is running a January promotion with competitive prices. Vying for the middle-market dominated by Jet and Ackermans, Mr Price offers a range of standard school gear for girls and boys of all ages.

While Mr Price does not offer a full uniform special, items can be bought individually as part of its back-to-school promotion, with big savings on school shirts, shorts and skirts.

A full school uniform at Mr Price, made up of individual items for ages six to nine years, starts at around R220.
