An Amazon warehouse in Delaware in the USA is offering hefty signing bonuses in an effort to attract hundreds of new workers.

The facility in Wilmington will give incoming workers $3,000 bonuses, Delaware Online reports. In rands, that comes to about R45,000.

The maximum hourly pay for a team member at the warehouse is $19.75 (nearly R300), according to a job posting. At this rate, the bonus is equivalent to nearly one month's worth of pay based on a 40-hour work week.

The job posting says new employees are eligible for the signing bonus if they work their first day before October 10. It also says the incentive only applies to certain positions and shifts, and workers must still be employed at the warehouse at the time the bonus is paid out. The sum will be paid in instalments.

Besides the $3,000 signing bonus, new hires can also get a $100 (R1,500) bonus on their first day for showing proof that they are vaccinated against Covid-19. The job posting says the warehouse is hiring for overnight, early morning, day, evening, and weekend shifts.

Amazon has already hired roughly 500 employees to work at the warehouse and plans to hire roughly 500 more before the year ends, according to Delaware Online. The facility is expected to open in late summer or early fall.

The warehouse was built on the site of a former General Motors plant, and staff there will work alongside robots to pack and ship small items, Delaware Online reports.

The warehouse's signing bonus falls under a larger umbrella of hiring incentives that Amazon is offering to grow its workforce in North America. The company announced in May that it is hiring for more than 75,000 jobs in its fulfilment and logistics network across the US and Canada. Amazon said at the time that it would offer signing bonuses of up to $1,000 (R15,000) to fill those roles.
