South Africans will eventually be able to get their hands on the Apple’s latest smartphone, the iPhone 12, in a couple of weeks.
More than two months after the device’s official launch in October, which had already been delayed due to a shortage of processing chips, Apple’s first 5G phone is set to hit South African shelves on 18 December 2020.
The latest update, after months of silence and uncertainty surrounding Apple’s South African reveal, was announced by Vodacom on Wednesday.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 mini will open on 11 December, the operator said.
While Vodacom has yet to announce any details regarding the price of the new iPhones, Apple has published a pricing and availability sheet via its international newsroom.
Using previous comparisons between the initial cost of the iPhone 11 in South and the US, South Africans can expect to pay much more than the Apple’s listed, dollar prices. At its launch in 2019, the iPhone 11 (64GB) retailed for R14,999 at iStores in South Africa and $699, or R10,024 at the time, in the US. This represents a premium of more than 47%.
According to Apple, the entry-level iPhone 12 (64GB) costs $799 or R12,228. Once shipped to South Africa and available for purchase, it’s likely that this iPhone 12 will retail for at least R18,000.
The iPhone 12, which is 16% lighter than its predecessor, features a 6.10-inch touchscreen and has been praised for its lighting fast A14 processor which utilises 4GB of RAM. The smartphone also features two rear cameras – one main 12 MP module and another ultra-wide 13 mm-equivalent lens – and can shoot 4K video at 24, 30 or 60 frames per second. The iPhone 12 Pro features three rear cameras.
