Pharmacy and beauty retailer Dis-Chem has a new 60-minute delivery service, DeliverD, the fourth such on-demand delivery offering by a major retailer since Checkers first launched its Sixty60 app in November 2019.

The retailer plans to launch DeliverD initially in selected stores across Johannesburg and other major metros and will then extended it to other regions where Dis-Chem has a presence.

It will launch first with a limited range of front-shop products during the trial period, and then thereafter, customers will be able to shop 7,000 items across the retailer's health, nutrition, beauty, cosmetic, and electricity product categories.

Unlike Checker's Sixty60 and Woolworth's Dash, Dis-Chem's offering doesn’t have a separate app and has the DeliverD service built within its existing mobile app.

Woolworths introduced Woolies Dash in November last year, allowing its customers to buy their groceries from a mobile phone and have them delivered in an hour. And then Pick n Pay followed, launching the same service through the Bottles App, which it acquired in October after initially partnering with the app at the start of the of the lockdown. The Bottles app's primary focus, before expanding to groceries was alcohol.

In its latest set of results, the Shoprite, which owns the Checkers brand, said Sixty60 has had more than one million downloads with 15,000 products delivered in an hour and has seen significant demand during the pandemic and particularly during the second wave at the start of the year.

Saul Saltzman, executive director at Dis-Chem said DeliverD complements the retailer's existing online offering.

"This development taps directly into understanding what our customers want, central to which is convenience. We have seen significant online growth in the past 12 months, and the ongoing customer demand for quick, same-day online service was a key driver behind the introduction of this offering," Saltzman said.

Delivery times, however, will be influenced by customer needs, their location, and the availability of slots.

The retailer hopes to use the trial phase as an opportunity for customers to provide feedback on their experience, allowing Dis-Chem to fine tune the services, it said.

"We foresee the trial phase being a partnership with our customers so that we can ultimately bring the best possible experience and we welcome feedback so that we can refine and improve this service," said Saltzman.
