Cape Town has ranked as the second most beautiful African city to run in, according to a count of hashtags on Instagram.

More than 1 million Instagram posts featuring the hashtag #run followed by the name of the city represented were recently analysed by online retailer as part of its latest social media campaign. More than 600 cities around the world were featured in the count, undertaken in March, to decide the "most picturesque location for runners."

The count looked at city-related hashtags in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia.

The results, published in April, show that London, with a total of 96,400 #RunLondon hashtags, is the most beautiful running city in the world. Chicago comes in second with 56,960 hashtags, followed closely by Boston with 54,600.

Only one African city managed to crack the top-20 list. With 15,005 hashtags, Lagos clinched nineteenth position, settling in-between Vancouver and Sydney.

"Home to the famous Lagos City Marathon, Instagrammers in the city are uploading shots of them taking on the event as it moves around the city," said

"When not taking on the marathon, runners are regularly seen over the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, as well as other Ikoyi-based routes and along the beaches Lekki has to offer."

With Lagos topping the ranks for Africa, Cape Town, home to the world-renowned Two Oceans Marathon, came in second position on the continent with 7,361 mentions.

Durban and Pretoria also feature in Africa's top five, but both behind Cairo, which garnered 2,053 hashtags. Durban, the finishing point for the prestigious Comrades Marathon, received 1,087 mentions, finishing fourth on the Africa rankings. Pretoria, in fifth place, got 640.

In the African standings, South Africa and Nigeria tie, each having three cities in the top-10, with Ibadan coming in sixth and Abuja tenth.
