If you’re looking for an escape, which, after a year that’s been characterised by cabin fever, is more than likely, Black Friday 2020 is the perfect opportunity to score big on holiday packages. While you can pick up good international travel deals, uncertainty surrounding global restrictions and tight purse strings are forcing many South Africans to look a bit closer to home.

This Black Friday, local airlines and travel groups offer discounts to stimulate local tourism around Southern Africa.

FlySafair discounts already-low fares by up to 30%

FlySafair, South Africa’s low-cost carrier, has dropped its prices even further on Friday 27 November, giving travellers an opportunity to travel to and from local destinations at unbeatable prices. For 24-hours only, FlySafair is running a Black Fareday promotion which includes return flights from South Africa’s seven major airports.

The annual festive season rush, which sees inlanders heading to the coast in Cape Town and Durban, has been made even more affordable. Return flights from Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo) to Cape Town International range from R422 in the first week of December to just over R1,000 from the middle of the month to the Christmas period.

Flights from Johannesburg to Durban are far cheaper. On Wednesday 2 December, you can book a return ticket for just R271, which is the lowest fare on offer and likely to be sold out soon. Fares in the middle of the month, between 14 and 21 December, range from R422 to R622.

With school holidays extending until 27 January 2021, FlySafair’s Black Friday discounts offer an inexpensive family getaway in the new year, with prices generally lower than fares in December.

SafariNow offers up to 65% of selected accommodation listings

While getting to and from your destination is the first step, finding wallet friendly accommodation is key to holidaying on a budget. Local travel agency, SafariNow, has returned with its Black Friday promotion, offering discounts of up to 65% on guesthouses, villas, chalets and more.

If you’re looking for a true South African experience, the price of a stay at the luxurious Karongwe River Lodge, near the Kruger National Park, has been cut in half, now priced at R6,200 per night. A night’s stay at Lindi Lodge, in the Mjejane Game Reserve which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park, is also on offer at half price for R3,400.

Vacationing by the coast has also been discounted. A night at the Whale View mansion in Hermanus, which sleeps up to ten people, has been discounted by 50% and now costs R2,750. The popular San Lameer Villa, located just south of Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal coast, is also offering a 40% discount, making one night just R780.

CapeNature’s 40% discount on reserve accommodation and camping facilities

CapeNature, which operates wilderness areas and reserves in the Western Cape, has returned with Black Friday 2020 with its successful 40% discounts. The online only offering includes access to and accommodation in the Grootvadersbosch, Rocherpan, Marloth, De Mond, Gamkaberg, Goukamma, Gamkaskloof and Kliphuis.

Looking ahead with Flight Centre’s international Black Friday specials

Flight Centre South Africa is offering discounts on international flights and holiday packages. Considering the current global travel restrictions, these deals would usually come with an element of risk. Flight Centre has, however, offered all deals with an exclusive moneyback guarantee. Additionally, these offers allow for bookings within the first half of 2021.

The travel agency’s Zanzibar offering is a travel deal to take note of, with a return flight from Johannesburg going for under R10,000 and a travel package, including 4 nights’ accommodation including breakfast at the 4-star Uroa Bay Beach Resort costing R2,190 per person.

A five nights in Mauritius, at the 4-star Beachcomber Mauricia, which includes breakfasts, dinner and return flights, is discounted by 20% and now costs R16,790 per person. It’s important to note that although Mauritius remains closed to international visitors in December, stays dates for this special extend begin in June 2021.

Flight Centre is also offering flights to Dubai, from Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban at R8,900 as part of its Black Friday promotion.

Discounts on intercity bus travel and car hire

Passenger transport discounts extend beyond flights, with South African coach services and car rental agencies joining the Black Friday frenzy.

Citiliner and Greyhound busses are offering R50 off all bookings above R300. This offer is applicable to tickets booked through Pick n Pay, Shoprite or Checkers.

Europcar is offering Black Friday discounts on Western Cape vehicle rentals. Drive club members can get up to 50% in savings while regular customers are afforded 30% discounts. This offer is valid from Friday 27 to Monday 30 November and travel must be completed before 15 December 2020.
