Our favourite kitchen gear and gadgets specials this Black Friday
Black Friday is famous for the discounts on big-ticket consumer items like TVs, but the 2018 version in South Africa also features decent discounts on slightly less expensive kitchen tools we lust after.
Here are our favourite kitchen gear and gadgets deeply discounted for Black Friday 2018, so far, in order of the size of the discount as calculated by us, rather than based on the claims of the sellers.
54% off a Nescafé Dolce Gusto Eclipse coffee maker from Pick n Pay Hypermarket
Pick n Pay Hypermarkets are selling 260 units, on a one-per-customer basis, of the strangely-shaped Nescafé coffee maker for R1,599. That is not quite the R2,400 saving it claims (you can get it for around R3,500 normally), but it is still a pretty steep discount. Pick n Pay will also throw in four boxes of capsules.
47% off a Kenwood BlendX blender from Loot
Loot has the 2-litre Kenwood Blend-X Classic Blender (model BLP610WH) for R999, which really is the 47% discount on the usual price the site claims (if you are lucky), and also a lot cheaper than any previous specials we could find.
A note of caution: don't confuse the Classic with its more-feature-packed Kenwood Blend-X Pro big brother.
41% off a Scanpan knife set from Adams Discount Centre
Adams Discount has the 5-piece Scanpan Spectrum knife block on sale for R799, which is 41% down from the typical prices we found it for. The price for this set varies quite widely over time and between retailers, but the special is a great deal cheaper than any other we could track down.
The set includes a utility knife, cook's knife, bread knife, and a santoku knife.
36% off a Mellerware Airfryer from Makro
Makro is selling the Mellerware air fryer (model 27102A) for R699, which is 36% below the typical retail price – and even more off compared to the recommended retail price. It is also R150 less than the cheapest other air fryer we could find online, and cheaper than the special one-day-only price you could have grabbed it for a year ago.
33% off a Defy pressure cooker from Makro
30% off a Big Green Egg Minimax ceramic outdoor cooker
From midnight, the Hirsch's chain is due to start selling the Big Green Egg Minimax ceramic cooker for R7,000. That's not quite the discount the store claims, but still 30% less than the usual price you would pay – and a huge discount over the price some retailers charge.
There are various sizes of the Big Green Egg, so make sure it is the luggable Minimax, not a larger or smaller version, you are after.
25% off a Smeg stand mixer from @home – and from DionWired
@home is selling the sleek and popular Smeg stand mixer for R4,999 as opposed to the usual price of closer to R6,700. But the more popular colours were selling out fast online, starting with red (as was also the case with the colourful Smeg kettles on special), so you may have to hit the physical stores to get one.
When last we checked, DionWired is due to start selling the exact same Smeg stand mixer for the exact same price at midnight on Friday, in an online-only deal.
Don't bother going here in search of Black-Friday-specific deals
Specialist kitchen retailer Yuppiechef is not participating in Black Friday 2018. Instead it will give you the cheapest of four items on a special sale for free.
Woolworths has a Black Friday special on its kitchen range – but instead of deep specific-item specials you can get 30% off buy buying two items from its list.
American specialist retailer Bed Bath & Beyond had a "landed price" service for shipping to South Africa, but that was not available this week. "The international order option is currently out of order on our website," the company told Business Insider South Africa, with the promise that it would be up and running again soon.
4Home is running various holiday-season specials, but nothing specific to Black Friday, and no serious discounts caught our eye.
