Baby goods retailer Babies R Us is set to open its third instore baby wellness clinic in October, much like Baby City's new clinics that offer specialised baby and female care inside its actual stores.
The retailers are going head-to-head in the baby wellness segment, where the addition of the in-store clinics offers a one stop shop destination, allowing customers access to one-on-one healthcare for their children while shopping for baby essentials.
It's a potentially lucrative market with 900,000 babies born annually in South Africa.
The Babies R Us clinics form a part of the baby goods retailer's wellness product offering. It was introduced in May at the Gateway Theatre in KwaZulu-Natal. Its second instore clinic started operating at East Point Mall in Boksburg at the start of this month.
It plans to open a wellness clinic in September at its Mall of Africa flagship store and another in October at Canal Walk.
Over the next two years, the retailer, which has a network of 47 stores across the country, plans to have a wellness clinic in all provinces. This year, its focusing on being present in the key provinces.
"The inclusion of BRU Wellness Clinics have now made it easier for moms to access exceptional medical care, advice, and practical tips on caring for their child," Babies R Us' Ronel Grant said.
Much like Baby City's offering, Babies R Us has dedicated nursing practitioners onsite to assist customers. It includes various services such as pregnancy wellness checks and advice, post-natal care, and caesarean section wound monitoring, and pap smears.
It also has baby wellness services incorporating weight, growth and health assessment, and development milestones. Other offerings involve offering advice to moms on breastfeeding challenges, guidance on the introduction of solid foods, sleep, and potty training.
"We understand that each family is different and take a family-centered approach to the care we provide. Our goal is to make the entire process seamless, from shopping for baby essentials to wellness, and this one-stop solution allows us to simplify, integrate and streamline access to these much-needed services," says Grant.
