Amazon's big entrance into making video games has been cancelled
- Amazon quietly killed development of "Breakaway," its upcoming online sports video game.
- Reps for the game's development team said it's "no longer in active development" on Reddit over the weekend.
- Nothing specific is cited for the cancellation. "We didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be," the statement reads.
When Amazon isn't selling home goods, or creating electronics, or any of the dozens of other things the company does, it occasionally makes video games. Amazon even went as far as to buy a game studio, Double Helix, back in 2014.
But it looks like Amazon's biggest video game project in the works has been cancelled.
The game — "Breakaway" — is "no longer in active development," according to a letter on Reddit attributed to the "Breakaway" development team.
No specific reasons are given for the game's cancellation.
"In spite of our efforts, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be," the note says. "After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas."
"Breakaway" was first introduced in 2016 alongside two other games in development from Amazon Game Studios — the umbrella name for all of Amazon's game development production.
It was said to be a "mythological sports brawler" where you played as one of several archetypes of heroes (seen above). The focus of the game was moving a ball towards an opposing team's goal, with each team made up of four human players.
More importantly for Amazon, "Breakaway" touted integration with Amazon's Twitch game streaming service and its many community participation features. Game streamers could invite viewers to games, for instance — it was billed as a game built for the new world of video game streaming.
Here's the full note from Amazon's "Breakaway" development team: Amazon Game Studios, Orange County (formerly Double Helix):
We wanted to update you on the development of Breakaway.
Since our last announcement, we have worked to implement community feedback and iterate on Breakaway’s core gameplay. While we have developed many ideas and made a lot of progress, we are also setting a very high bar for ourselves. In spite of our efforts, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be. After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development.
We remain exceptionally proud of the team’s work, and feel privileged to have been a part of such a dedicated and enthusiastic community. We will reach out to this channel as soon as we have news to share regarding our new projects, and if a thunderbolt of inspiration strikes that leads us back to Breakaway, you’ll be the first to know.
The Breakaway Team"
