Appliance giant LG has just launched a smart fridge to South Africa. Called the InstaView, it is part of a new range of devices that will turn your property into a smart home.

Thanks to cameras inside it, the fridge can scan your food and send you recipes based on its contents. It also adjusts its internal temperature according to the temperature outside, saving electricity.

An app allows you to control it from your smartphone, which means you can control it from anywhere in the world.

In the US, LG teamed up with Amazon, allowing the fridge to order you milk before you’ve realised you’ve even run out.

The entry level model is on sale for R30,000, with prices ranging to R110,000 for the top-of-the-range model.

The fridge also allows you to see into it without opening the door. The right door has a translucent window embedded into it, that when knocked on, will activate the light inside. This prevents air loss. According to LG, an average household opens their fridge 79 times a day.

An earlier version of this article stated that LG has teamed up with Google Assistant to integrate South African accents into the fridge programming, to assist with voice commands. This was not the case.
