The Spur-owned RocoMamas chain makes a well-dressed burger. Its impressive line-up of burgers, sticky ribs, and decadent milkshakes makes it easy to order something that is picture worthy – and its customers love taking such pictures.

Teviews on Tripadvisor, Twitter, and Instagram are glowing, and RocoMamas boasts it has "the most instagrammed burger in South Africa".

I went to see if the beef stacked up to the pixels, ordering one of the most carbo-lusciously beautiful burger we could find on the menu: The Slacker with bacon and maple-flavoured syrup.

Here’s what I found:

The vibe was great. The restaurant is just around the corner from me, and is always busy.

They gave us paper straws – which I loved.

The burger was indeed picture-worthy, dripping with cheesy goodness, a well-stacked beef tower, a voluptuous bun, and crispy bacon.

It smelled like a Belgian waffle thanks to that sugary maple. But my patties were dry and not nearly as juicy as I would have liked.

The cost of the burger was a downer at R105 for 300g of beef. Add on a small fries at R19, and you are looking at a R124 meal.

The original Slacker, which costs R87, seems a better deal. If you just add extra bacon (R13) you'll pay R100. The limited edition adds two slices of bacon and replaces the mayo with maple-flavoured syrup for an extra R18. That's R5 more for virtually the same burger.

Comparing like for like, the price fits in slightly above a cheese and bacon gourmet burger in a Hudsons: The Burger Joint, Spur or Steers.

Price comparing similar patty sizes, cheese and bacon. Left to right: Hudsons, Spur Steers

You could also, for roughly the same price, get a 200g rump or sirloin steak (with chips) from Spur, or a large gourmet Panorottis pizza – companies that are part of the same corporate family.

The verdict: Beautiful on the outside but meh on the inside 6.5/10

Comparing what you can get elsewhere, for the same price, the burger needs to taste as good as it looks to really stand out. It didn't stack up in my book.
