The Spur-owned RocoMamas chain makes a well-dressed burger. Its impressive line-up of burgers, sticky ribs, and decadent milkshakes makes it easy to order something that is picture worthy – and its customers love taking such pictures.
Teviews on Tripadvisor, Twitter, and Instagram are glowing, and RocoMamas boasts it has "the most instagrammed burger in South Africa".
I went to see if the beef stacked up to the pixels, ordering one of the most carbo-lusciously beautiful burger we could find on the menu: The Slacker with bacon and maple-flavoured syrup.
Here’s what I found:
The original Slacker, which costs R87, seems a better deal. If you just add extra bacon (R13) you'll pay R100. The limited edition adds two slices of bacon and replaces the mayo with maple-flavoured syrup for an extra R18. That's R5 more for virtually the same burger.
You could also, for roughly the same price, get a 200g rump or sirloin steak (with chips) from Spur, or a large gourmet Panorottis pizza – companies that are part of the same corporate family.
Comparing what you can get elsewhere, for the same price, the burger needs to taste as good as it looks to really stand out. It didn't stack up in my book.
