Class is in session with 13 South African creators making the list of 26 African creators admitted into the #YouTube Black Fund Class 2022.

In its second year the #YouTubeBlack Fund Class announced its African class 2022 on Thursday, January 27.

The African cohort is a class of 26 creators from Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The African creators form part of the global cohort of 135 creators from around the world.

Of the 26, 13 South African creators made the class. In its second year applicants who identify as Black and are YouTube content creators from the listed participating countries are encouraged to apply for the fund every year.

Hailing from a variety of backgrounds all these creators according to YouTube's released statement have a single common thread, a desire to give back to their communities with their content.

Relatable and insightful content are just two ways to describe the South African creators. These recipients will participate in a developmental programme which will give them access to networking and training programmes, and lastly seed funding to help grow their respective channels.

"This group of creators is making content that starts important conversations about issues we face in society, which really resonate with their audience. We are inspired by them and hope that the skills they learn from being part of this programme will help them touch more lives than they'd ever imagined," says Alex Okosi, MD, Emerging Markets, YouTube EMEA.

Gugulethu Nyatsumba a growing YouTube sensation known for her thought-provoking content is commonly known as 'Sis'G.U'. Nyatsumba tells Business Insider SA that black creators are overlooked and an opportunity like the fund is important. "Amplifying black voices means amplifying our stories, our culture and celebrating black-ness," she said.
